Hypothesis

Even if wording changes clicks, that may not carry through to purchases; both labels must accurately describe the same action.

How to run this test

Primary metric

Purchase conversion rate (CR)

Compare purchases per assigned visitor, not just among visitors who clicked the CTA.

Other metrics

  • Click-through rate (CTR)Measure CTA clicks while changing the label only.
  • Add-to-cart rateCheck whether add-to-cart changes.
  • Exit rateTrack exits after the new label is shown.
  • Page progressionReview progression through the unchanged page; this is not a sticky-bar test.

What to check before and during the test

  • LabelCompare the current CTA label with a short alternative that accurately describes the same action. Set both labels before launch and keep color, size and position fixed.
  • Keep constantDo not change color, size, position, icon or surrounding design.
  • BehaviorRead CTA clicks alongside the completed purchase.
  • DeviceReview mobile and desktop separately.
  • Separate testsTest color, size or placement separately.

Setup mistakes to avoid

  1. 1Keep the established brand design unchanged.
  2. 2Keep each visitor in the same assigned arm throughout the test.
  3. 3Do not change color, wording and size together.
  4. 4Do not apply a winning primary CTA style to secondary buttons if it erases their visual hierarchy.
  5. 5Use the assigned wording consistently for equivalent CTAs.
