Hypothesis

Moving difficult questions to the end could simply shift where visitors abandon the form, so judge the result by submissions rather than form starts.

How to run this test

Primary metric

Form completion rate

Compare successful submissions to see whether reordering fields affects completion.

Other metrics

  • Form start rateCompare visitors who begin the first field after seeing the form.
  • Field-level abandonmentTrack the field where visitors leave and check that abandonment has not simply moved to the end.
  • Form completion timeCompare time from form start to successful submission.
  • Valid submission rateMeasure submissions that meet business rules; check whether faster completion leaves invalid data.

What to check before and during the test

  • OrderCompare the current order with a predefined easy-to-difficult order supported by past error or completion-time data.
  • Keep constantKeep fields, labels, validation and required status unchanged.
  • AbandonmentReview all abandonment points, including difficult fields moved to the end.
  • Logical flowPreserve field dependencies and a sensible sequence of questions.
  • SegmentsCheck whether new and returning visitors respond differently to the order.

Setup mistakes to avoid

  1. 1Do not remove or add fields when changing their order.
  2. 2Do not decide early from lower abandonment; check whether it shifted to the final fields.
  3. 3Do not move consent text that must legally appear at a specific point.
  4. 4Do not create an illogical sequence, such as asking for a neighborhood before a city.
  5. 5Do not turn a result from one form type into a rule for all forms.
