Hypothesis

Either may affect decisions, but neither guarantees urgency or trust. Compare the two accurate messages only for products with valid data for both, using the same presentation.

How to run this test

Primary metric

Purchase conversion rate (CR)

Compare purchases per assigned visitor across the shared set of products eligible for both messages.

Other metrics

  • Add-to-cart rateCheck whether urgency changes the first action.
  • Time to purchaseMeasure time to purchase; time on the product page is a different measure.
  • Return rateTrack returns over the same follow-up period in both arms.
  • Perceived brand trustIf surveyed, ask a direct trust question. NPS measures likelihood to recommend, not trust itself.

What to check before and during the test

  • Message typeCompare a real recent-purchase count with actual remaining stock.
  • PresentationKeep placement, design and supporting detail consistent.
  • Time windowSet the activity-counting window before the test starts.
  • DeviceReview mobile and desktop results separately.
  • EligibilityDefine a shared data rule and fallback in advance for when either message is unavailable.

Setup mistakes to avoid

  1. 1Never show fabricated numbers; they can quickly undermine trust.
  2. 2Use product-specific data rather than copying one generic number across products.
  3. 3Show only the single message assigned to each visitor; never show both together.
  4. 4Do not tie the count to a fake counter that keeps increasing.
  5. 5Keep the message from disrupting the price and CTA hierarchy.
