Hypothesis

Compare them with free entry while keeping the option to enter a custom amount and leaving every amount unselected by default.

How to run this test

Primary metric

Total amount per assigned user

Divide the total amount of completed transactions by all eligible assigned users, including those who did not complete a transaction.

Other metrics

  • Transaction completion rateCompare completed transactions among eligible assigned users who start one.
  • Amount per completed transactionCompare transaction amounts among completed transactions only; do not confuse this with total amount per user.
  • Custom amount entry rateCompare visitors who enter their own amount.
  • Amount correction and cancellation rateTrack transactions corrected or cancelled because the amount was wrong.

What to check before and during the test

  • InterfaceCompare free entry with predefined amount buttons and an “Other amount” option.
  • Keep constantKeep currency, fees, amount limits and transaction flow unchanged.
  • RecommendationsPredefine suggested amounts; results apply to this set of suggestions.
  • SelectionDo not preselect a suggested amount.
  • AudienceReview first-time and repeat users separately.

Setup mistakes to avoid

  1. 1Keep free entry available; do not force users to choose a preset amount.
  2. 2Do not preselect a high amount and steer visitors into paying more without noticing.
  3. 3Do not change the buttons' presence and amounts together.
  4. 4Do not call a win from completion alone without checking average amount.
  5. 5Keep amount labels large enough to read.
