Hypothesis

A collapsed section shortens the initial layout but requires an extra action to see details. Compare the default state of the same content while keeping essential information visible in both arms.

How to run this test

Primary metric

Add-to-cart rate

Compare successful add-to-cart actions per assigned visitor when the same description starts expanded or collapsed.

Other metrics

  • Purchase conversion rate (CR)Compare the effect of the default description state on completed purchases.
  • Return rateCompare returns for orders with the same completed follow-up window; review reasons separately when available.
  • Product-related support questionsCompare questions about topics covered in the description across both arms.

What to check before and during the test

  • Default stateStart the same description expanded in one arm and collapsed in the other.
  • ExpansionReport opens in the collapsed arm as a diagnostic measure, not as a shared success metric.
  • Section scopeKeep included sections fixed and leave information essential to a purchase decision visible.
  • Layout effectRecord how content and CTA visibility change without separately moving the CTA.
  • CategoryReview categories with different information needs.

Setup mistakes to avoid

  1. 1Do not hide information needed to decide, such as material, compatibility or warranty, behind a collapsed section.
  2. 2Change the default state only; keep the description text the same.
  3. 3Do not make the content visible to search engines but hidden from shoppers.
  4. 4Use section headings that describe their contents.
  5. 5Do not remove a section just because few visitors open it; the heading may be unclear.
