Hypothesis

If accurate and unobtrusive, it may reduce mistaken expectations about scale. This test uses a measurement line; a familiar object or person would be a different variant.

How to run this test

Primary metric

Scale-related return rate

Compare scale-related returns among orders with a completed follow-up window in each arm. Review the result alongside conversion and revenue.

Other metrics

  • Purchase conversion rate (CR)Compare purchases among all assigned visitors who see the measurement line.
  • Product measurement questionsCompare support questions about product size using the same traffic denominator.
  • Revenue per visitor (RPV)See how total revenue changes even if the line brings in more orders.

What to check before and during the test

  • Measurement lineAdd a fixed line that shows the product's actual dimensions.
  • ReferenceDo not switch between a line, object or person as the scale reference.
  • Image slotChoose one image slot and keep the number of images the same.
  • ReadabilityMake sure the line does not obscure the product and that the measurement remains legible.
  • CategoryReview categories where physical scale is relevant.

Setup mistakes to avoid

  1. 1Do not use a reference that makes the product look larger than it is.
  2. 2The line must show a real measurement, not serve as decoration.
  3. 3Do not change the scale cue and image count in the same test.
  4. 4Keep written dimensions available alongside the image.
  5. 5Do not generalize from one category to categories where scale is not an issue.
