Hypothesis

An authorized customer photo can show how it looks in use, but may change perceived image quality. Compare the main image while keeping the rest of the gallery unchanged and ensuring both images meet usable quality standards.

How to run this test

Primary metric

Purchase conversion rate (CR)

Compare purchases per assigned visitor across the two photo types.

Other metrics

  • Add-to-cart rateCheck whether shoppers take the first purchase step.
  • Return rateTrack returns over the same follow-up period; do not attribute every return to the image.
  • Page load timeCheck the loading cost of each hero image.

What to check before and during the test

  • Hero imageCompare one studio photo with one genuine customer photo of the same product.
  • GalleryKeep the remaining images, image count and layout unchanged.
  • CategoryReview results within relevant product categories.
  • Mixed galleryTesting a gallery that mixes studio and customer photos is a separate comparison.
  • Price bandReview predefined price bands without applying one product's result to all products.

Setup mistakes to avoid

  1. 1Use images with adequate resolution and framing in both arms.
  2. 2Do not change the product description along with the photo type.
  3. 3Get permission to use customer photos.
  4. 4Repeat the test by category rather than applying one result across the catalog.
  5. 5Keep studio photography available; compare it with customer imagery rather than replacing it outright.
