Hypothesis

If the recommendation is a poor fit, it can also feel pushy or misleading. The defined arms add a recommendation to otherwise neutral options, so the result includes both the message and its presence.

How to run this test

Primary metric

Purchase conversion rate (CR)

Compare purchases among eligible visitors assigned to neutral options or to one clearly stated recommendation.

Other metrics

  • Revenue per visitor (RPV)Show how changes in purchase conversion affect total revenue.
  • Return rateTrack returns over the same follow-up period; do not attribute every return to the recommendation.
  • Recommended option selection rateReport the share selecting the featured option among all assigned visitors and among those who make a selection.

What to check before and during the test

  • MessageCompare neutral option presentation with one explicit recommendation.
  • FitVerify that the recommended option is suitable for the intended customer.
  • RationaleFix the wording and any supporting rationale before the test.
  • Other choicesKeep every alternative accessible and record selections across options.
  • AudienceReview defined customer groups without assuming one recommendation fits everyone.

Setup mistakes to avoid

  1. 1Do not call an option the best fit solely because it has a higher margin.
  2. 2Do not imply the recommendation is personalized if everyone sees the same option.
  3. 3Change either the wording or the recommended option, not both in the same test.
  4. 4Keep other options easy to access.
  5. 5Do not declare a winner from conversion alone; review returns as well.
